WA: Night curfew mooted for children in Northbridge
A curfew will be imposed on unsupervised youths at night in Perth's inner-city entertainmentprecinct, Northbridge.
West Australian Premier GEOFF GALLOP's told ABC radio the ban on unsupervised peopleunder 18 is part of a bid to make the area safer and to protect the welfare of children.
Violent incidents, many of them gang-related, have in recent years tarnished Northbridge'sreputation.
Juveniles caught in the area after dark will be taken off the streets until collectedby parents or guardians, or until welfare arrangements are made.
But a key Aboriginal group says the curfew plan's offensive to the local Nyoongar people, and harks back to the Native Welfare regime of the 1940s which placed all Aboriginal peopleunder such restrictions.
The Nyoongar Patrol, which offers support to Aboriginal people, says a curfew wouldtake away the right of indigenous youth to come into the city.
