The Federal Opposition says Australia should consider setting up a body similar to
the Institute of Manufacturing at Britain's Cambridge University.

Opposition industry and technology spokesman BOB MCMULLAN says South Australia - with
its traditional strength in manufacturing, university courses and the SA Centre for Manufacturing
- is ideal for such an establishment.

The Cambridge institute was dedicated to modernising British manufacturing and included
education courses, collaborative research with industry and a networking and advocacy
role for the sector.

Mr McMULLEN was speaking at a Strengthening South Australia seminar in Adelaide today,
organised by federal Labor MP DAVID COX.

Meanwhile, SA Opposition Leader MIKE RANN says a state Labor government would focus
on reviving local industry and look to a major trade push into the Middle East.

Mr RANN says a state Labor government would recast the successful Centre for Manufacturing
as a centre for industry, adding information technology and new economy areas.
