NSW: Study claims chocolate may have some health benefits

Scientists say chocolate may not be all bad for you, and may even have some role in
preventing heart disease, provided it's consumed in moderation.

The findings of a pilot human trial, based on the consumption of popular chocolates,
are due to be made public in Washington this weekend.

In Australia, CSIRO Chief Research Scientist of health science and nutrition, Dr IVOR
DREOSTI says, the studies indicate chocolate can be beneficial because it contains the
antioxidants also found in fruit, vegetables, tea and red wine.

Antioxidants are believed to protect the body against age-related chronic diseases,
including heart disease.

However, Dr DREOSTI warns that little is known how the chemicals work, and the benefits
may depend on how much cocoa is contained in chocolate.

And, he warns chocoholics against using the preliminary findings as an excuse to eat
excessive amounts of chocolate, saying moderate amounts in a mixed diet are the way to
go.
