QLD: Flooding highlights drought problems says Cooper

The Queensland opposition says not even the floods in south east Queensland will solve the
water storage problems for farmers in the area.

Opposition primary industries spokesman RUSSELL COOPER says the serious underlying water
shortage in the south east must be fixed to keep primary industries and communities viable.

Water storage projects pushed by the National Party include re-cycling Brisbane's waste
water to the Darling Downs, the Lockyer and Brisbane Valley -- all major farming areas.

Mr COOPER says the Nationals also want to pipe excess water for the massive Wivenhoe Dam,
north west of Brisbane, to the Atkinson Dam near Toowoomba.

Mr COOPER says recycling Brisbane's waste water would have the added advantage of cleaning
up Moreton Bay, where water quality have criticised by scientists.
