WA: Australia's first beach polo event to be held in Broome
PERTH, April 8 AAP - Camels will give way to horses on Broome's Cable Beach in May
when Australia's first beach polo event will be staged on the famous strip of sand.
Professional polo players from around Australia will converge on the West Australian
town in the remote Kimberley region to compete in Paspaley Beach Polo 2010 on Sunday,
May 23.
Cable Beach is renowned for its sunsets and strings of camels taking tourists on rides
along the shore.
The polo event has been initiated by Marilynne Paspaley, a local hotel and resort owner,
and Janek Gazecki of Polo Enterprises Australia.
Mr Gazecki said Cable Beach would join only a handful of places around the world to
host beach polo - Miami in the US, Poole in the UK, Dubai in the United Arab Emirates
and Goa in India.
Beach polo tournaments were rare because they required a specific mix of sand consistency,
tidal conditions and beach gradient, but Cable Beach had it all, Mr Gazecki said in a
statement.
Players, headed by Australian polo captain Glen Gilmore, will compete for the Paspaley Cup.
The event will be free for the public to enjoy from the sand dunes of Cable Beach.
Organisers say the event has the potential to become a major event on Australia's tourism
calendar.
