Fed: Lib senator says phone blackspots break election promise

A former Liberal minister has accused the federal government of breaking an election
promise to provide mobile phone coverage along all highways.

Senator IAN MACDONALD .. who was dumped as fisheries minister in the recent reshuffle
.. says there are still blackspots .. particularly along highways in north Queensland.

Telstra manager MAX JENNINGS has told a Senate committee that from Port Augusta in
South Australia to Port Douglas in far north Queensland .. there are only 25 kilometres
without coverage.

But Senator MACDONALD says he doubts that is true.





The coalition promised in 2001 to deliver mobile phone coverage along all Australia's highways.
